Blocked Fallopian Tubes

What are blocked fallopian tubes?

Blocked fallopian tubes are one possible cause of female infertility. Fallopian tubes are female reproductive organs that connect the ovaries and the uterus. There are usually no symptoms, but there are some risk factors that can increase the chance of developing the condition.

Blocked fallopian tubes can be caused by the following:

  • endometriosis, which can
  • cause a tissue buildup in the tubes
  • pelvic inflammatory disease, a disease that can cause scarring
  • fibroids, which are growths
  • scars, which can be caused by ectopic pregnancies or abdominal surgery
  • some sexually transmitted infections

Flushing Fallopian Tubes

Can flushing blocked fallopian tubes improve fertility?

Women often struggle to fall pregnant due to blocked fallopian tubes. It has resulted in frustration, and even caused couples to give up trying to conceive naturally. Many couples then follow surgical procedures.

A study was conducted in England and it showed that many women under 38 years old suffer from blocked fallopian tubes. The results of that study gave researchers a clear understanding, and couples facing infertility received more clarity. For some without a reasonable cause for infertility, the study represented a potential alternative when they would pursue IVF treatment.

So how does “flushing” work?

Fertilization happens inside a woman’s fallopian tube and if it’s blocked it obstructs the meeting of the egg and sperm. A doctor will perform a scan to determine whether your fallopian tubes are open or not. Flushing has several advantages, including that the benefit persists over time. The flushing method involves injecting oil through the fallopian tubes during an X-ray scan and check for blockages. To search for blockages doctors put a liquid containing dye into the uterus. The dye can then be seen on X-ray scans as the liquid flows from the uterus through the tubes revealing whether they are blocked or not. The injecting of oil into the uterus procedure is called a hysterosalpingography.

So to answer the question on flushing fallopian tubes, yes, flushing blocked tubes with an oil based substance such as poppy seed oil can improve infertility.
