The Importance Of Seeing A Fertility Specialist

A fertility specialist refers to a doctor that identifies and treats any infertility related issues. Fertility specialists treat both male and females who have been struggling to conceive a baby. They help understand the underlying causes of infertility and suggest the possible treatments for it. The specialist monitors the patient’s health during the entire process of the treatment undertaken.

Factors that causes infertility in women:

  • Fertility decreases usually after the ages 35 and women struggle to fall pregnant
  • Endometriosis / Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • Ovulation issues
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Obesity / health related issues
  • Hormonal changes

Factors that causes infertility in men:

  • Abnormal or low sperm production
  • Pain, swelling or lump in the testical area
  • Erectile dysfunctions
  • Genetic history of testicle/ prostate problems
  • Varicocele (swelling of the veins)

When should you consult a fertility specialist:

Should you have a chronic medical condition – it is important to run genetic tests to ensure that you are healthy when conceiving. If there are any conditions or disease such as diabetes, cancer, kidney/ heart diseases or any other genetic disorders, consulting a specialist would be worthwhile to determine the necessary treatments.

Irregular menstrual cycle/ heavy bleeding – Having an irregular cycle can often be an indication of having an ovulation disorder. Women who experience a heavy menstrual flow / period pains can also be caused by structural abnormalities.

Miscarriages – This occurs when the sperm or egg has a wrong number of chromosomes which does not allow the fertilized egg/ fetus to develop normally. There are many other factors which cause miscarriages such abnormal hormone levels, early development problems, uterine abnormalities, infections and many more. If you have had two or more miscarriages, it would be helpful to work with a specialist to monitor your health and increase the chances of conceiving.

Age (35+) – The older you get the chances of the quality of your eggs may decrease. There is a possibility of being a high-risk as this may lead to various outcomes such as miscarriages, birth defects and abnormalities and pre-clampsia.

Males struggling to maintain an erection – There are many causes to men having erection problems.This includes health/ lifestyle choices, medical conditions and age. Erectile dysfunction occurs when male is not unable to get/ keep an erection for sexual intercourse.
