The Fertile Window

The Fertile Window

Your fertile window is made up of a few days each menstrual cycle when conception is possible based on the combined maximum lifespan of human sperm and eggs. The main benefit of fertility charting when trying to conceive is being able to identify your fertile window so that intercourse can be optimally timed.
The absolute maximum fertile window based on the combined maximum lifespan of human sperm and egg is 6 days. These days are the five days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. This is because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract in favourable conditions for up to five days after intercourse and can be waiting there for when the egg is released at ovulation. So even though the human egg usually survives for just a single day, once released from the ovary intercourse that takes place during the few days before ovulation as well as the day of ovulation can result in
conception.
When trying to conceive however, considering 6 days as potentially fertile is really very optimistic. Although pregnancy is
technically possible during this time frame and any intercourse that occurs within this time frame could result in conception most pregnancies can actually be attributed to intercourse that takes place on the 2 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation. What this means practically is that the fertile window is really incredibly narrow when trying to
conceive. Leaving just 3 days to have a good chance to conceive.
Intercourse needs to take place within this 3-day fertile window. Once ovulation has passed you’re no longer fertile for that cycle and conception is no longer possible. Finding this narrow fertile window is the absolute most important factor when trying to conceive.
Your own fertility pattern is unique to you. To conceive in a particular cycle finding your own narrow fertile window
by observing and charting your fertility signals and focusing on baby making on those days will dramatically improve your conception chances. You’ll know your fertility status at every stage of your cycle.
